How often should you change your pets’ water?

It is said that their water should be changed daily, or even multiple times a day.

But why is this necessary?

The easiest way to understand why you should give them clean water so often is just to imagine how much water you would you only had access to water that has been left uncovered in a glass for days, and all sorts of dirt could get in it. I am guessing not nearly enough.

Nor would anyone want to drink from a used, dirty bowl, that’s why we also have to clean the bowl itself. Pouring clean water into a dirty bowl is not going to keep the water fresh.

Most pets have their water bowl on the floor, or outside on the ground. Much like us, pets don’t want to drink dirty water, therefore, not cleaning the bowl so often would eventually lead the pets to be dehydrated.

Dehydration, just like in humans can lead to several health problems, like UTIs or kidney issues. Aside from dehydration, the water can start to fill up with all sorts of bacteria that can get the pets sick. I am sure none of us wants that for our beloved furry companions.

We have a busy day and forget to change the water and clean the bowl. This, however, in the long run, might cause some complications does not mean that we should beat ourselves up for it. As long as the water is visible and clean it shouldn’t cause too much trouble.

If we tend to forget to change the water often, there are some convenient solutions that we can choose from. For example, there are automatic dispensers that filter the water and refill the bowl, there are pet water fountains which keep the water circulating, or we can even choose self-cleaning bowls.

Keep in mind that these inventions still need to be cleaned and refilled, we just don’t have to do it so often.
